Last night the Queen Elizabeth, the newest Cunard liner, sailed into Long Beach Harbor to pay homage to the Queen Mary, which is docked at its permanent location. Escorted by the Goodyear Blimp, The Queen Elizabeth positioned itself in front of its predecessor and the two sister ships exchanged whistle blasts in a mutual salute. A message from the Queen Elizabeth’s captain, honoring the Queen Mary, was delivered through loudspeakers to the crowd waiting on the the ships Promenade deck. This was followed by a fireworks display.

Over the past decades Cunard Line, which once owned the Queen Mary, has sent vessels to pay tribute to the first queen. In the early 1980s, Cunard Princess made a stop and in 2006, it was the Queen Mary 2 and in 2011 it was Queen Victoria. The latest visitor, the 2,068-passenger Queen Elizabeth, which went into service in October 2010.
