LONDON – New details are emerging in the arrest of The Dark Knight star Christian Bale.

The incident that led to the actor’s arrest reportedly occurred following a confrontation between the actor and his mother, Jenny Bale. She allegedly insulted Bale’s wife, Sandra ‘Sibi’ Blazic, according to Britain’s The Daily Mail.

A source close to Bale told the newspaper he “flew off the handle” at his London hotel when Jenny Bale said “some outrageous things” about her son and his wife.

Though The Dark Knight star was arrested and released on bail, the newspaper’s source claims Bale did nothing wrong.

“Christian was stressed, but he didn’t lay a finger on anyone. Instead, he flew off the handle and cussed his mother. He just got very loud because his mother was saying some very outrageous things about him, and his wife,” the source said.

Bale’s lawyers issued a statement Tuesday denying the allegations of assault.

The actor’s sister, Sharon Bale, told Britain’s Telegraph an “incident” had occurred but would not offer up any details surrounding the events that led to her brother’s arrest.

“OK, there was an incident but the police are dealing with it,” she said. “It is an extremely sensitive situation. There is nothing more I can say.”

Jenny Bale was also tight-lipped, but said they did not call the police.

“Yes, I was there, and yes there was a family situation, but the police are handling it and I cannot say anymore at the moment,” Jenny told the Telegraph. “We didn’t call the police to the scene. I can’t say anymore, but we didn’t call the police.”

Bale is expected to attend The Dark Knight premiere in Barcelona, Spain, on Wednesday.

BREAKING NEWS

‘Batman’ star allegedly assaulted mom, sister

British media report Christian Bale arrested over incident at London hotel

The Associated Press
July. 22, 2008

LONDONBatman star Christian Bale was arrested Tuesday over allegations of assaulting his mother and sister, police and British media said.

British media had reported that Bale’s mother and sister complained they were assaulted by the 34-year-old actor at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Sunday night, a day before the European premiere of his latest film, The Dark Knight.

The women made the allegation at a local police station in southern England on Monday, Britain’s Press Association news agency said. It later said Bale had been arrested, citing “police sources.”

Asked whether Bale was in custody, a police spokesman did not refer to him by name but said: “A 34-year-old man attended a central London police station this morning by appointment and was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault.”

The spokesman spoke anonymously in line with force policy and refused to go into more detail. British police do not name suspects before they are formally charged.

U.S.-based representatives for Bale didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment. Repeated phone calls to Bale’s London representative went unanswered.

The Sun newspaper said police didn’t question the actor Monday because they didn’t want to interfere with the premiere of the movie.

Wales-born Bale first made a splash as the child star of Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun in 1987. His screen credits also include American Psycho, The Machinist and Batman Begins.

In The Dark Knight, Bale reprises the role of wealthy playboy Bruce Wayne and his crime-fighting alter-ego Batman, a brooding vigilante superhero still scarred by the murder of his parents.

The film, which stars the late Heath Ledger as Batman’s nemesis The Joker, took in a record $158.4 million at the box office in its opening weekend in the U.S. last week.

 UPDATE

Bale’s London representative issued a statement on Tuesday. “Christian Bale attended a London Police station today, on a voluntary basis, in order to assist with an allegation that had been made against him to the police by his mother and sister. Mr. Bale, who denies the allegation, co-operated throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question, and has left the station without any charge being made against him by the Police.”
