Wyeth’s watercolor and tempera landscapes and portraits made him one of America’s best loved artists. He remained a figurative painter who prospered even in times when the genre was deemed passe.

Andrew Wyeth, whose realistic yet often melancholy paintings of rural Pennsylvania and Maine made him one of America’s most popular living artists, and whose 1948 landscape “Christina’s World” was one of the 20th century’s most famous artworks, died Friday.
