Donald Sutherland was the proudest father in America yesterday as he watched his son Kiefer honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

After years of well-documented drinking escapades and several arrests for drink driving, including a jail sentence, Kiefer bounced back to accept the honour at a star-studded ceremony.

Pride & Prejudice star Donald, 73, gave a touching speech about his 41-year-old son by the star outside a parking garage on Hollywood Boulevard.

The celebratory scene could not have been more different from Kiefer’s life a year ago.

This time last year, the actor had just begun a 48-day jail sentence for drink-driving stemming from September 2007.

In a speech, Donald paid tribute to his son, describing how he watched him grow into an ‘astonishingly good’ actor.

Watching his son’s triumph after his recent troubles would have been a proud moment for Donald, who has always been incredibly supportive of Kiefer.

Following his arrest, Donald said: ‘All I can tell you is that he (Kiefer) is the most honourable, responsible, decent man I know, and I love him with a passion.

‘(Kiefer) behaved in a way that was so pure and so perfect and so respectful. There are other elements in our community that were less so, but he was perfect.’

The 24 star is the 2,377th person to be awarded the honour – the first one went to Joanne Woodward in 1960.

Also in attendance at Tuesday’s unveiling were film director Joel Schumacher and his 24 co-stars Mary Lynn Rajskub, Carlos Bernard and Annie Wersching.

His role as agent Jack Bauer made the 41-year-old a household name, and the show returns for a seventh series on U.S. television next month.
