Rest in Peace, Sid Grauman…

Chinese Theatre impresario Sid Grauman (left) with true Hollywood greats, Norma Shearer and Irving Thalberg

Late last night emergency personnel were called to Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale where loud noises, banging and crying were heard emanating from the Sanctuary of Benediction corridor of the Great Mausoleum.  After a brief investigation, workmen discovered the sounds were coming from the crypt of Sid Grauman, the builder of Hollywood’s Egyptian and Chinese Theatres. Evidently the great showman was turning over in his grave after the cast of the X-Factor–Simon Cowell, Britney Spears, L.A. Reid and Demi Lovato, left their handprints in cement at the forecourt of the legendary Chinese Theater. This once honored Hollywood tradition, which in the past has been reserved for the greats of film history (need it be mentioned the film hits of Cowell, Spears, Reid & Lovato??), last night was finally put out of its misery. While choices in the recent past have been questionable, one can only wonder who is next–the Kardashians? Rest in peace, Sid Grauman.

Mickey Rooney Gets Restraining Order Against Stepson

February 15, 2011

(NewsCore) – LOS ANGELES — Hollywood veteran Mickey Rooney obtained a restraining order against his stepson Tuesday in Los Angeles, alleging that the man is trying to steal his assets, TMZ reported.

The 90-year-old actor claims stepson Christopher Aber, 52, “threatens, intimidates … and harasses” him and has tried to convince him to sign over his assets to him.

According to Rooney’s petition for the restraining order, “Mickey is extremely fearful that Chris will become physically threatening against Mickey and may even attempt to kidnap Mickey from his home.”

Aber and his wife were ordered to stay 100 yards away from Rooney. Rooney also asked the judge in the case to appoint a temporary conservator to help protect his assets, and the judge complied by granting conservator status to Rooney’s attorney.

Aber is the son of Rooney’s eighth wife, Jan Rooney, to whom he has been married since 1978.

Elizabeth Taylor treated for congestive heart failure

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Oscar-winning actress Elizabeth Taylor has been admitted to a Los Angeles hospital to treat congestive heart failure, the latest in a long history of serious medical problems.

Taylor, 78, was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center earlier this week for what her publicist said on Friday was “an ongoing condition.”

“Elizabeth Taylor was hospitalized earlier this week … suffering from symptoms caused by congestive heart failure, an ongoing condition. This issue is being addressed … She is currently being kept in the hospital for monitoring,” Sally Morrison said in a statement Taylor, a double Oscar winner famous for her eight marriages — twice to actor Richard Burton — underwent heart surgery in 2009 to replace a leaky valve.

She announced in 2004 that she had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure — a condition in which the heart cannot pump enough blood to other organs.

“Her family and close friends are appreciative of the warm support and interest of her loyal fans but have asked that people respect her privacy and allow her medical team the time and space to focus on restoring her back to health,” the statement said.

The London-born Taylor, who won Oscars for her roles in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” in 1966 and “Butterfield 8” in 1960, has been using a wheelchair for more than five years to cope with chronic pain after breaking her back four times.

In 2006, she appeared on Larry King’s CNN interview show to deny reports that she was gravely ill or suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Taylor has had three hip-replacement operations, a benign brain tumor, skin cancer and pneumonia. She spent two stints in rehab in the 1980s for alcohol and prescription drug addiction.

Taylor first achieved stardom at the age of 12 in “National Velvet” and became famous for her violet eyes, dark alluring beauty and love of diamonds.

She still makes appearances at charity events, especially those connected to her AIDS foundation, but has not appeared on screen since the 2001 TV movie “Old Broads”. Her last Hollywood movie performance was the 1994 live action comedy “The Flintstones”.

Jackie Autry explains accident

Jackie Autry explains car accident that left homeless man dead

Jackie Autry, the widow of former Angels owner Gene Autry, said Tuesday she’s still reeling from a Thanksgiving night accident in which her car struck and killed a homeless man crossing a street in Palm Springs.

“The guy came out of nowhere,” Autry said Tuesday, contacted by telephone at her Riverside County home. “It was an accident; it’s what can happen when people cross a street with no lights wearing black clothes. I feel bad for the man and any family he may have.”

Palm Springs Police Sgt. Paul Abshire said “there was nothing at the scene, and no statements, to indicate [Autry] was under the influence.” Abshire added the investigation won’t be completely closed until an autopsy is conducted on Jesus Cardova Diaz, 50, of Palm Springs.

Autry said she was returning from a Thanksgiving dinner in La Quinta with two friends seated in the back seat of her vehicle. She said she was not drinking alcohol at the dinner.

“We were in a 35-mph zone and I was going about 25,” Autry said. “I had taken my foot off the gas because the [stop] light ahead was changing when he [Diaz] popped out of nowhere.

“I jumped out of the car and my friend called 911. I tried to talk to the man, but he didn’t say anything. I told everyone not to move him. He was lying on his side/stomach. The ambulance came and took him to the hospital.”

Diaz died about an hour after the 7 p.m. accident, authorities said.

“It’s been a terrible thing to deal with,” Autry said. “I’m not sure I’ve even dealt with it yet.”

Autry, who annually presents the American League Championship trophy, said she received a comforting phone call from Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Palm Springs) who told her homeless people typically gather in Sunrise Park near where the accident occurred on Sunrise Way north of Ramon Road. Autry said the man might have been following others to a grocery store across the street from the park.

The death at the holidays has shook Autry, 69, she said, given her support of the Los Angeles Food Bank and an organization that assists homeless people in returning to work.

“We try to help people in need, and people especially need help these days, where so many are just one missed paycheck away from becoming homeless,” Autry said.

Titanic sunk by steering mistake, author says

LONDON (Reuters) – The Titanic hit an iceberg in 1912 because of a basic steering error, and only sank as fast as it did because an official persuaded the captain to continue sailing, an author said in an interview published on Wednesday.

Louise Patten, a writer and granddaughter of Titanic second officer Charles Lightoller, said the truth about what happened nearly 100 years ago had been hidden for fear of tarnishing the reputation of her grandfather, who later became a war hero.

Lightoller, the most senior officer to have survived the disaster, covered up the error in two inquiries on both sides of the Atlantic because he was worried it would bankrupt the ill-fated liner’s owners and put his colleagues out of a job.

“They could easily have avoided the iceberg if it wasn’t for the blunder,” Patten told the Daily Telegraph.

“Instead of steering Titanic safely round to the left of the iceberg, once it had been spotted dead ahead, the steersman, Robert Hitchins, had panicked and turned it the wrong way.”

Patten, who made the revelations to coincide with the publication of her new novel “Good as Gold” into which her account of events are woven, said that the conversion from sail ships to steam meant there were two different steering systems.

Crucially, one system meant turning the wheel one way and the other in completely the opposite direction.

Once the mistake had been made, Patten added, “they only had four minutes to change course and by the time (first officer William) Murdoch spotted Hitchins’ mistake and then tried to rectify it, it was too late.”

Patten’s grandfather was not on watch at the time of the collision, but he was present at a final meeting of the ship’s officers before the Titanic went down.

There he heard not only about the fatal mistake but also the fact that J. Bruce Ismay, chairman of Titanic’s owner the White Star Line persuaded the captain to continue sailing, sinking the ship hours faster than would otherwise have happened.

“If Titanic had stood still, she would have survived at least until the rescue ship came and no one need have died,” Patten said.

The RMS Titanic was the world’s biggest passenger liner when it left Southampton, England, for New York on its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912. Four days into the trip, the ship hit an iceberg and sank, taking more than 1,500 passengers with it.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Marie Osmond’s 18-year-old son Michael Blosil has died, the entertainer said Saturday.

Osmond said in a statement through her publicist that her family is devastated by the “tragic loss.” She did not provide details on the death.

Entertainment Tonight reported on its Web site that Blosil jumped to his death Friday night from a downtown Los Angeles apartment building.

Officers responded to an apparent suicide jump in the area, but the victim was not identified Saturday, Los Angeles Police Officer Gregory Baek said.

“My family and I are devastated and in deep shock by the tragic loss of our dear Michael and ask that everyone respect our privacy during this difficult time,” Osmond said in the statement.

Blosil reportedly left a note which referred to a lifelong battle with depression.

In 2007, Osmond said Michael was treated at a rehabilitation facility, but she didn’t disclose the nature of his problem.

Donny Osmond, Blosil’s uncle, told Entertainment Tonight: “Please pray for my sister and her family.”

Michael is one of Osmond’s five adopted children. She also has three other children from two marriages. She divorced Brian Blosil in 2007 after two decades of marriage. She and her first husband Stephen Craig divorced in 1985.

Osmond earned fame at age 13 with the hit song “Paper Roses,” and starred with her brother, Donny, on television’s “Donny and Marie Show” during the 1970s.

They perform a musical variety show regularly at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. The hotel said Saturday’s performance was canceled.

Actress, 32, collapsed in bathroom; autopsy planned for Monday or Tuesday

An official with the Los Angeles coroner’s office says actress Brittany Murphy, 32, may have died of natural causes. The actress, who got her start in the sleeper hit “Clueless” and rose to stardom in “8 Mile,” died Sunday in Los Angeles.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter says the cause of Murphy’s death “appears to be natural.”  He says Murphy apparently collapsed in the bathroom Sunday morning, and authorities are looking into her medical history. Winter says Murphy’s family is cooperating with the coroner’s investigation. He says an autopsy is planned for Monday or Tuesday.
